In this photographic series, I set out to capture the essence of Ithaca’s vibrant local business scene through intimate portraits of the individuals who make our community thrive. Each image represents a moment of quiet dedication—a craftsperson at their station, a farmer arranging produce, a firefighter preparing equipment—revealing the human foundation of our local economy.
These photographs document the diverse tapestry of makers who shape Ithaca’s unique character: new employees beginning their journey at beloved institutions like Autumn Leaves Used Books; established artisans like Kimberly Hutsal of Two Foxes Studio practicing their craft at the Farmers Market; and dedicated professionals like Andy Schwartz, who has spent five years ensuring Cinemapolis remains a cultural cornerstone.
My work deliberately places each subject in their working environment, using natural lighting and authentic moments to honor the dignity of their labor. Through this documentary approach, I aim to highlight the intersection of personal passion and community service that defines Ithaca’s maker culture.
From third-generation farmer Richard Sabol to Brien Bianchi, these individuals represent more than their occupations—they embody the entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to craft that makes our local economy resilient and distinctive. As Ithaca continues to evolve, these portraits stand as a testament to the human connections that form the bedrock of our community.
