Comprised of Slotoroff as the lead singer, Jake Alvarez on the drums, Will Shuttleworth playing the lead guitar/backing vocals, and Wade McManus playing the bass, The Danbees have created the type of feel they were searching for. “I would describe us as dancy rock and roll/pop grunge,” said Slotoroff.
On October 4th, The Danbees played at Urban Outfitters Mystical Freak Out!, a live music showcase where anyone with a college ID received 50 percent off all sale merchandise.
“Do you see this!?” said Marcus Henry, the University representative for Urban Outfitters. “The store never looks like this. It’s probably going to be the biggest day of the year.”
In a store packed full of college kids, The Danbees played a few original songs while mixing in some covers. Henry said The Danbees were a perfect fit for the event.
“Our target audience is 21-27,” said Henry. “We designed this program to reach out to students in big college towns. Their music attracts the kind of people we really want to shop here.”
Though The Danbees didn’t receive any monetary compensation for the event, they were pleased to be out in the community playing a show.
“We would definitely consider playing here again,” said Slotoroff. “It’s not our normal scene. It’s free publicity for us. If we advertise a little better, we could definitely have success [playing at Urban Outfitters].”
Urban Outfitters plans on having events like the Mystical Freak Out! eight times a year, Henry said. As for The Danbees, they will continue to play shows in the Ithaca area throughout the year, and look forward to a possible tour during the summer of 2014.
